So, yeah, super hyped for this. >> Yeah, I was actually probably a little bit uh salty that I had no intel myself kind of, you know, I thought I'd have a a little bit of hole in the the scene where I'd get a little bit of sneaky time playing the game by myself or with a few other players. But yeah, I didn't even know that this was happening. So, pretty cool that we're able to be playing it this early as soon as it's announced. Pretty unusual, wouldn't you say, considering like we've both been involved in some uh alpha and beta testing over the years. >> Yeah, for sure. And yeah, they definitely unorthodox this time around, but I think it kind of makes sense because uh you know, they originally cancelled this DLC like a year ago or whatever. >> So, I feel right. I know there were those endless polls voting about the most flexible civs, but when it comes down to it, most players aren't good enough to leverage the advantages civs like Byz or China have in being flexible. While OTD isn't the best in each field, and can't do absolutely everything, it can do most things pretty well. It has some drawbacks, but not enough that it nullifies the advantages. Even more so since the TC cost buff, and general spear/MAA buffs. They can drush or trush better than some civs(higher starting wood, beefier vils) Feudal aggro(decent early eco and strong units) or feudal harass with pseudo knights(horsemen) Both FC options are viable and serve a purpose, even if burger is generally easier to leverage, even regnitz means more since inspiration and healing are significantly more useful. MAA swarm or FC MAA vs 2 or 3TC civs. Their eco is above average and only becomes better over time, not only through vil pop efficiency, but also since their gather bonus is multiplicative (unlike a lot of bonuses in the game). They can 2TC with meinwerk into better defensive units (aren't as susceptible as some civs to MAA) or super greed with 2TC aachen into regnitz. They can turtle better than most civs. They have a viable fast imperial, with a multitude of power units, but also end game units. (for example yumi are amazing, but fall off faster as the game progresses) A lot of their units can do more than their specific class, spears are much better vs MAA than most civs. Archers are better vs other ranged units, and even camping under defensive fire. One of the most cost effective MAA in the game. Xbows are much better vs siege than other civs (range and alpha damage, can soak more siege fire). Their horsemen are pseudo knights (high hp allows them to be withdrawn and recoup investment). They're simultaneously less reliant on gold, since their trash units can be leveraged to hit above their class. Their infantry are not slower than other civs, even if the civ

Game: Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Game build: 101.103.48987.0 Steam build ID: 24094652 Platform: Steam / PC Operating system: Windows 10 Pro 22H2, build 19045.6466 Incident date: July 25, 2026 Reproduction frequency: 1/1 observed incident ISSUE EXPERIENCED When that save was loaded through Multiplayer > Restore Game, the restored lobby showed Regicide as unchecked. The Regicide checkbox was locked, as expected for a restored game, so the host could not re-enable it. Starting the restored game then created a new recording with the Regicide setting genuinely cleared. This is therefore not only a visual problem in the restore-lobby interface. The out-of-sync save itself still contains the original Regicide setting. The setting is lost after the save is loaded, while the game is constructing or launching the restored multiplayer session. FREQUENCY OF ISSUE How often does the issue occur? I used to play this game everyday. I made mods for it and custom maps. Then we started having bugs with custom scenarios failing to transfer in lobbies. Took a year for this to fix. But during this time i started playing less and less, to a point of 3 games a week. Today i host to play a game. Lobby fills up after people join and leave. When i press start. Lobby crashes, it takes me to main menu. I am playing with 8 random people, rehosting will take another 20-30minutes for the lobby to fill up. People who crash in lobby will not join it again. Many close aoe2 when i try to invite them. Everytime we play this game. There is a new type of bug that hinders the fun and we just try to be patient and continue playing. But this game wasted so much of my time of lobby waiting times, rehosting the lobby because of crashes. Or people getting randomly kicked out and taking longer to fill the lobby. I will continue playing it 1 time a week. But i just hate that there are these types of bugs in this game. Next update we get 3 civs in a DLC when such a lobby-crashing-to-main-menu bug has been in the game for about 3 years now. fyi: i hate ranked and campaigns in aoe2. I only play custom scenarios. This is a personal preference. I prefer other competitive games than aoe2.

I'm making this post to discuss the Russia vs China matchup (in standard 1v1 supremacy) I'm a ~1700 elo player and have been playing a lot of Russia on the ladder recently. I've had great trouble against China especially because of (ironically) flamethrowers. I've played a few times against China going age 2 and massing flamethrowers, and I don't know how to deal with it. China has good age 2 shipments and can mass pretty quickly, so I can't just all in. And once they get a deathball rolling with flamethrowers mixed in, they just destroy my army. 30 siege damage per second with area of effect deals a ton of damage to my infantry, and none of the units can really kite them with their low range and the enemy hand units slowing me down. I tried to mass Cossacks as well, but pikes and keshiks do short work of them in age 2. I tried to play more defensive and age up quickly, but then China just has even more options, push with age 2 units or age up themselves and mass quicker, I think both beat me pretty easily. The new patch gives me hope, I think going cav archers age 2 may be the answer, China always struggled against skirm goon after all. But with the low range of strelets and inability to kite of cav archers I'm still not sure it would work. Any insights from Russia mains out there ?

I believe this guy is not that much better than me. I see on replay that in the end he had 9k stone. Not sure it's optimal. I did some early pressure at first, manage did my military tech, and even managed to win a few battle. Yet in the very late, when it comes to a battle of attrition, he just wins. We both had good gold generation (pilgrim vs merchant) yet he managed to win a last push. I just dont understand this game past castle age, and almost never win longer game. Any tips ? What's my biggest mistake in this game ?

The tech currently states: Increase **Battering Ram** attack speed by +20% and reduce their field construction time by -50%. However, the Byzantines do not use standard Battering Rams . Their unique ram unit is the Cheirosiphon , which replaces the Battering Ram entirely. Therefore, the technology description is misleading and does not match the civilization’s unique siege roster. These guys are awesome, but they need your help! Spread the word folks, while we can. I think we, maltese players, for years wanted these guys to be in a better spot. I myself was on hopium that one day devs might return and buff them ever since Malta came out. They should stay 2 pop, but at the same time: Rocket ability should be fixed (for some reason it has negative multiplier against artillery? Its like nerfing yourself when you try to face arty). Incendiary upgrade at arsenal should affect sentinels like it does soldados. I see no reason not to, Ive only seen majority of players agree to this. Wall guns needs to be reworked into an actual working card. It is outright a joke when you see how little it gives and how hard it is to trigger it with positioning. Someone gave a nice idea that infinite cards should still apply 2% hp bonus. I think thats nice for treaty, but if too problematic, make it just 1%. The gunpowder depot card should allow sentinels to build them, or at least buff it's effects or damage. It loses power hard lategame Sentinels should build faster lategame too. So many cards and the explorer goes into build speed to make them versatile, but realistically the build time is so slow that opponent accidentally just bumps into you mid building and overwhelms your builders. It should be 1 consequence, not both. It only makes sense design wise for a conditional, defensive musk to be the strongest when fully carded and defending (stronger than soldados) but weaker when not. If this is too much of a problem, at least make them on par or if thats also a problem, enhancing their versatility should be priority. And I can see sentinels or Malta get slightly nerfed elsewhere in return. Either slightly in cost (overall) or movement speed when giving them flintlock rockets, or something like that. However, this state is not persistent . If Berserk is deselected and then reselected , the UI reverts back to Normal Commands , instead of staying on Combat Commands as expected. Hello fellas, I have had some problems with Mouse Lag / Screen Lag for some time in the game (The mouse would freeze then jump to location), similar to a Stuttering problem but with no Internet relationship. These days I was trying to find some files then I came across the graphical config file for the game. It is in the path showed below: Captura de Tela (154) 917×351 20.2 KB When I openned the file I found that the value for Screen Refresh Rate was very WRONG! My Screen has a 120hz rate, It was set for my last Monitor (75hz) value. I’ve had problems with this on Windows itself, when this setting is wrong you can get serious lag even on Desktop! Despite Berserk being focused, the voice lines played belong to Theris , not the focused unit. When forming a control group , the portrait shown is Theris , even though Berserk is still the focused unit. When recalling the control group, the UI continues to show Berserk as the selected unit , not the Legend whose portrait appears. This results in a mismatch between: the unit actually selected , the unit portrait shown , and the voice lines played . This makes it difficult to reliably control Legends and access their abilities. Literally 90% of my games right now are people doing an FC cheese strat and quite honestly after 8 years of playing this game almost every day, I’ve had enough. I’m about 1500 so I know the usual ways to counter, but some civs you simply cannot do enough damage before being steamrolled by their unique unit, whether or not it’s from a castle. The res collected allows for a tower, and by minutes 12-14 you just can’t do enough to slow them down. Pros lose to other Pros doing it. The FC player always has the immediate advantage unfairly. I also don’t know what the answer is either. It would have to be a broad enough nerf to affect everyone, but equally it means all civs suffer. The only way I can think of, is if Castle age costs slightly more before 16-18 mins, like 300 gold. But at the moment, the game is no longer enjoyable.

"Simpler mode with no cards/home cities", but several large modifications to core civs. It's designed almost exactly like AoE2 - heavy emphasis on Forts being able to train powerful unique units, as well as little boosts here and there to help differentiate basic units (like Dutch getting +15% speed on hand infantry). But they went totally off the rails with a couple civs (below is just translated from the card names mentioned in the original post): Maltese: Priests can gather from Berries, Mills, and Estates (gather rate improved near Church/TC/Commandery). Order Cassadors & Settler Wagons available in Commanderies. Teutonic Knights and Knight Brothers available in Forts. Mexicans: Forts have +6 range and can siege buildings, Infantry and cavalry in an area of 32 around Forts have +25% hit points and damage, Baseline Barbacoa (Haciendas auto-gather fattened cattle), Rancheros (Haciendas auto-spawn Cuatreros), can train Conquistadors from Native Embassies, Revolutionaries enabled at Barracks in Age 2. Californios enabled at Stables in Age 4. Tulancingo Cuirassiers and Cruzob Infantry available in Forts. Lakota: Built-in Kinship Ties (can train Villagers from 100w Native Embassies) and Camp Movements (can move TC and other buildings from start of game). Lakota War Chief can build the Native Stronghold in Fortress Age. Tokala Soldiers and Cheyenne Riders available in the Native Stronghold. Town Centers can train Bison herds in Industrial Age. Each civ gets cool bonuses, but these 3 stuck out to me like crazy! Looks like even though it's supposed to be a "simpler" version of the game to play, there'll be things you can only do in that mode which excites a player such as myself!

Has anyone ever uninstalled the game and had a licensing issue when trying to add it later? I uninstalled the game because I couldn't launch and the file verification steps failed, but when I went to reinstall, the game doesn't even show up anywhere in my games library any more. I see the license history in my Steam license page, and the store page says I own the game but there is no play or install option. I tried installing manually but it says no license. I have a steam support ticket in, but it's going slowly because they think it's a client issue. It seems like the license is broken to me, since I can't even try to install it. All of the troubleshooting steps they give me seem to be based on the presumption that the game is showing up in my list of games on the client.

I was thinking about this and wanted to hear what the community thinks about this idea. Sandy Petersen is such an interesting and enjoyable guy to listen to, and it honestly surprises me that AoE2 tournaments do not seem to invite him. I think it would be great if tournaments, whether LAN events or even online events, brought him in as a special guest on webcam between games. He could talk about the old days of the game, share fun facts, and maybe even comment on newer civs or other parts of AoE2 history. It would add something fun and unique to the broadcast, and I think a lot of people would enjoy it. I know that he has been on some YouTube videos and I could be listing to these videos for hours and hours. So I am curious. Why do you think this has not happened yet, and would you like to see Sandy Petersen featured in future AoE2 tournaments as a special guest?

I've always enjoyed the game's theme, especially the first campaign, and of course, the jump to multiplayer can be overwhelming (I'm aware of that), plus AoE3 is more niche than AoE2, for example. There are a million things I'm doing wrong, and I'd like some guidance, from playstyle and build order to cards, etc. I'm fascinated by the Maltese, truly; their unique units seem incredible to me, but I have a slight feeling they're worse at absolutely everything. In my first game, I played Maltese, focusing 100% on Crossbowmen against an Ottoman. His composition was Janissaries, Grenadiers, and Spahi. I would at least expect my Crossbowmen to be able to melt his Janissaries with my various metropolis upgrades, but I didn't feel like this made an impact. He could have just brought out Janissaries and still beaten me, as far as I understand, my crossbows should counter his Janissaries. I ended up losing the game due to various mistakes and a skill difference, but I believed that at least in that aspect my crossbowmen would be useful. In the second game, I played against a Dutch player. Initially, I managed to play very defensively, building a better economy than in the previous game, training many settlers, fortifying my city, trying to capture resources, and creating towers and walls for my Sentinels. My Metropolis deck focused exclusively on prioritizing Sentinel upgrades. I gained some control of the map, and everything was going perfectly. My opponent initially created about 30 skirmishers, which I was able to defend against without problems, until he appeared with Highlanders. There was no way to respond in time; 400 HP versus the supposedly scaled 240 of my Sentinels simply melted me. I love the Maltese, I adore their units, and I don't dislike their playstyle, but I'm really terrible at the game, and something's clearly wrong with me. Increase their damage to archer and ca and nerf the damage to non-archer units -Monks and knights. Monks counter knights too easily. Increase knight resistance with 1 second -Infrantry is still too weak. Archer and economy civs get played but not infrantry civs. Which pro plays regulary teuton knights, incas jaguar or celts woad raider? Maybe they need more armor against archers? -Rams and scorpions are a bit weak. Slightly increase their damage

After years of sweat, blood and tears...i finally reached conq 1. I've been playing aoe since the 90s with aoe1, aoe2 aom and aoe3. Highest level of competition i ever reached was with aoe3 being a Colonel level 35 strictly on nr40 with Portuguese, Germans and Spain. I had 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals all 4 in 1v1 treaty. Hardest part of transitioning to aoe4 was that there is no no rush in aoe4 and ranked in aoe4 is a whole different game. I had been close so many times before and tonight with the help of my team I finally got it. I main Rus, Kt and OOTD all the way to diamond and used french to get to conq. Now for the traditional lose all the way to mid plat for the next weeks since every time i reached a new personal best i got rocked down like 4-5 ranks.

Micro their units. Use control groups, rally points and shortcuts. Fight for Sacred Sites and relics. Spend their resources instead of floating them. Actually use their armies. Know unit counters. React quickly to enemy aggression. Scout consistently. Of course they still make mistakes. But my point is this: Gold players are real RTS players. They understand the fundamentals of the genre. They're not just randomly clicking around or building a giant army before attacking. They know the mechanics, they understand strategy, and they're actively trying to execute a game plan. So raise your head, casual Gold player with a full-time job, a balding head, and kids. You have nothing to be ashamed of. Remember how you used to play aoe2 as a kid. You're playing one of the hardest genres in gaming, and you're playing it properly: keep pressuring as life pressures you.

But when I got into university, I really want to experience the game again, but my new Mac M2 doesn't support AoE3 cuz of the different chip. Therefore, I used Porting Kit and downloaded AoE3 via Wineskin. But when I opened the game, it looked like this. Any ways to fix this? Also, I also downloaded the free trial version since January 2026 but I haven't run into this problem on the trial version before.
