I'm a fairly new player and I have a tendency to turtle and focus on econ in the early game and launch large assaults in the late game. Portugal seems like it's the best fit for my general playstyle, but I'm still trying to perfect the deck and build order. For example, I frequently find myself bottlenecked by wood even with shipments. What cards and build order work best for Portugal? Also, what other civs work well for my style of play?

Heavy infantry doesn't counter light cavalry. Melee heavy infantry will never touch well managed light cav while musketeers (caroleans and other variants as well) don't have a multiplier against light cav. Heavy infantry counters heavy cav and buildings instead.
