I used to play old versions of AoE2, and we had normally noobs that knew how to trush or flush but then cant boom or survive past castle age. They would try to rush you, then leave the game if the rush fails. Same happened the other way around, if you rush them, and they lose some vils they quit. This is not the type of game we enjoy, this is quite boring to me and many others I know. This was extremely boring. So for this we created no rush games in Black Forest, where there was peace for about 30-45 min, depending on the levels of those playing. In some of these games I know im at full army at around min 35 with 200 pop, siege, and all upgraded army. It requires not a single mistake, using the market to boom even faster, hunting 4 boars without loom using the scout too. Though this was the old version. So with that in mind I sometimes used to roleplay a bit and only go very aggressive if i see the enemy is strong. If the enemy team is weak, I do a slow push, I trade more. Notice that for me to win very fast is boring. And I used to calculate if the enemy is likely to fall fast. And if I see them falling I often retreated my army. Or started making monks. I didnt want them to resign so fast. In AoE2DE this is different, and it doesnt work as well. Because every civ can cut the forest. And there are too many civs with units that are OP and dont have a proper counter. In AoK, trash armies were stronger and could counter most elite units. The hardest civs to counter in imperial was probably Franks with Axeman and Paladins well microed. Sarracens with Siege Onager and mamelukes. And of course britons. But in a 1v1 everything was possible because you would run out of gold, and a trash army could hold. Anyways... I went on a rant already. What im looking for is for tutorials to deter rushes. Im so good at booming that i won games in AoE2DE while getting rushed and losing, but keept booming, until the opponent with his 1 or 2 tc, who never learned how to boom eventually g

Hello! I play AoE2 since 2013 or something (DE since 2023). I play and played mostly campaign, vs bots or casual matches with players. I want you to ask simple question. Is ranked mode demanding for those who will start playing even first match of it? I guess many players tried and played some ranked matches and can tell about level there.

AoE2.ai is tracking 45,649 RM 1v1 players. Top five: #1 Oni.Vinchester 2,957, #2 wR.Sebastian 2,954, #3 VIT | Hera 2,919, #4 TAG_Sitaux 2,898, #5 wR.Lucho 2,840. Longest hot streak in the sampled top ladder: Oni.TaToH (26 wins). Best sampled win rate with 300+ games: VIT | Hera 75.0%. 79 of the sampled top players have played in the last 24h.

Gurjaras AI is not taking berry from a mill with sheep garrisoned inside. It is clearly trying to take berries, as its vils walk to a far teammate mill to take berries far-distance. All of its own berries untouched. Other related suboptimal play: Gurjaras AI teammates send so much sheep to it in dark age, that Gurjaras built two mills to garrison those 12 sheep. FREQUENCY OF ISSUE How often does the issue occur? CHOSE ONE; DELETE THE REST! 100% of the time / matches I play (ALWAYS) Take the above choice with caveat. I recently only played one game with Gurjaras AI, and it happened. REPRODUCTION STEPS List CLEAR and DETAILED STEPS we can take to reproduce the issue ourselves… Be descriptive! Here’s the steps to reproduce the issue: Arabia, 8-player map, 2 humans vs 5 extreme AI (no handicap). AI in clockwise order: Chinese, Britons, Gurjaras, Franks, Magyars. Romans human is next to Chinese, Mongols human is next to Magyars. Sheep & chicken map. No external mod, just regular stuff like small trees and some Anne_HK’s mods. Play regularly until roughly minute 15 Two human players play fast feudal two range archer rush, each attacking its flank opponent (maybe related, maybe not) EXPECTED RESULT What was SUPPOSED to happen if the bug you encountered were not present? Gurjaras AI regularly taking its own berries, instead of walking long-distance to teammate berries. Gurjaras teammate would send less sheep to Gurjaras, so they won’t have to build 2 dark age mills next to each other to garrison the sheep. WHAT THE FUCK were designers thinking? That they can turn an Age of Empires into Commandos for one scenario? HD made mistakes regarding campaign designs and since DE corrected most of them I thought these stealth missions had been removed.

Wololo! Yes I am the kind of person who grew up smashing AI armies into each other in age of empires 2. Here I go deeper into my childhood obsession by letting modern AI agents, powered by LLMs like claude and gpt, build custom AI scripts that play the game. I make them fight, and then I try to build a better strategy by letting agents tune the default AI strategy over and over until they find improvements. I'm not good at this game AND I know nothing about bot scripting, so I definitely missed a bunch of stuff! Let me know if there are obvious improvements.

With the 2 latest DLCs introducing new sets for existing civs (Incas and Vikings) I think we could expect more sets to be added in the future for other existing civs (Except Persians, for some reason) Additional possible architectures that didn't fit in the poll: Byzantine architecture, or maybe a Byzantine/Turkish hybrid for both of them. Additionally how about a hybrid set that starts as one and then becomes another in later ages? For example if a nomad set is added, how about Magyars or Turks starting with the nomad set for Feudal age and then switching to Eastern European / Middle Eastern sets on Castle or Imperial? South American civs should also ideally get their own sets as the Inca set doesn't really fit them, specially for the Tupi, but I think it's too early to think about giving them different sets. Also not a full architecture set but would be cool if Romans got a unique monastery based on the Pantheon of Agrippa, which is the perfect blend between a classical Roman Paganism temple and a Catholic one. As the title says, I want to learn about how AI scripting works. Is there a known website or resource to start understanding the basics? I'd love to be able to work with DE's regular AI and tinker with it.

This is kind of a follow up on my last post talking about detecting Elo manipulation. The results are... discouraging, to say the least. I won't name any players as to not break the sub's rules, but you can just look at my profile to see my last matches. Just to be clear I am making this post to bring attention to this issue, as I believe it's unacceptable to have this kind of players ruining the experience for the rest. This "smurfing" is a bannable offense, as it is against the Code of Conduct : [...] This can include, but is not limited to, repeatedly quitting a match early , sending excessive in-game taunts or tampering with the game. [...] Out of the last 7 1v1 games, I got 5 smurfs (pics and proof below). To be fair, that seems to be an unusually unlucky streak, but damn. I am reporting them all, and support refuses to ban some. So without further delay, here are the players (from most recent to oldest, starting 15 august 2026). In the pictures the most relevant are the defeats lasting Match 1: This is a "reformed" smurf. He used to tank his Elo, and as soon as he stopped, he climbed from 1200 to 1500. Haven't reported him, maybe he has changed his ways. Match 1, 1v1 He also has 20 short resign straks in team games: Match 1, team Match 2: A normal player! Notice the lack of early resigns and strage streaks, the smoothness of the graph, the slow but steady progression... This is what most players look like. Match 2, 1v1 Match 3: Incredibly flagrant smurf. Notice he regularly goes from 1300 to 1800 Elo. Match 3: 1v1 Look at his stats. He has resigned an absolutely incredible 1300 games. I've been working on an experimental rebalance mod for Age of Empires II HD (2013) called Věk Opevnění / Fortress Age . The idea is simple: I wanted AoE2 to feel less like a race toward the strongest upgrade and more like a long, expensive medieval war where fortifications, logistics and unit losses actually matter . Instead of simply increasing or decreasing a few stats, the mod changes the overall philosophy of progression. Some of the main ideas: Walls, towers and castles are significantly more important. Siege weapons are powerful, expensive strategic assets rather than disposable units. High-tier units are much more expensive to replace. Many unit upgrades are no longer pure upgrades. An upgraded unit can gain HP or damage while losing range, vision, attack speed or economic efficiency. Gunpowder weapons hit extremely hard but fire much more slowly. Battles are intended to last longer and developed defensive positions are much harder to break. The late game and Post-Imperial phase are much more important. For example, upgrading a Crossbowman into an Arbalest gives you a much harder-hitting unit, but at the cost of a major reduction in range. Scout Cavalry can be turned into much stronger combat cavalry, but loses much of its scouting ability. Heavy Camel and Paladin upgrades give you powerful elite troops, but replacing those troops becomes considerably more expensive. So the question is no longer always: “Can I research this upgrade?” but rather: “Do I actually want this upgrade for the army I'm using?” I am also working on a custom AI designed around the mod. It focuses more heavily on fortifications, keeps part of its army in reserve, invests more into stone, uses siege for breaking defensive positions and tries to make some of the new trade-off upgrades situationally

I've been away from the game for a few months and would like to start playing again, focusing on 1 or 2 newer civs for a bit, both for 1v1s and TGs. So my question is which among the recent DLCs (Khitans, Jurchens, Shu, Wei, Wu, Mapuche, Muisca, and Tupi) do you like playing the most in ranked? Keep in mind, I'm not looking exactly for the most 'broken' or powerful civ--just which ones are fun to play. I'd also like to keep from investing time into a civ that might see dramatic changes in an upcoming patch. For example, it seems like Champis are in a very awkward state right now (bad) and I'm hesitant in learning how to use them if they get overhauled or something? Thank

I'm currently knocking the dust off for a tournament by playing a bit of ranked. I can handle most rushes, but M@A rushes feel way more oppressive and hard to stop. - They come in way faster, feels like I haven't had time to even cough once arriving at Feudal. - They are harder for me to spot, as everyone but Khmer needs a barracks. - Nothing outright counters the unit. Countering scouts and archers isn't exactly free, but at least I can make units that genuinely spook them. But M@A? Archers just don't seem to do enough and take so much concentration, and by then they have just done so much damage.
