Yeah, I know AoE2 is already a pretty arcady game, but villagers being able to see a raid coming and then quick-wall an area within a second is such a silly mechanic. Having to rely on a player's ability to quick-wall like you're playing Fortnite takes away from what a palisade wall is supposed to be: a fully built, cool-looking and robust protection against enemy raids. I started to play 1v1 with a friend of mine. I am usually a Single Player Campaign enjoyer and I went for 3 games of Ethiopian Archer Feudal Rushes, one Spanish Conq and one Bohemian Wagons with Monks. My question is: How do you play around the fact that you need to somehow reach castle age quickly and build multiple castles to sustain those units to reach a critical mass?

With the new DLC only weeks away, is anyone else also hoping that they return to the old format of having the unique icons per campaign mission pre Three Kingdoms DLC? I know this is a minor thing to complain about but the newer style feels like it has less charm. Plus I kinda miss the medal next to mission showing difficulty completed, it’s not as clear in the new style.

It feels a bit like the devs might think that, because there are already campaigns for the three Chinese civs, Wei, Shu, and Wu, there is no need to make a campaign for the Chinese civ itself. Perhaps they think that since the Danes, Saxons, and Varangians now have campaigns, that effectively means the Vikings already have one too. But I completely disagree with that idea. I switched to linux some time ago, and seems that the xbox login popup is broken (just a blank page with no form controls). I found a workaround , but I wonder if I actually need it. After a brief check, I can see lobbies (even xbox ones) can enter ranked (at least queue for a match). I suppose I won't be able to unlock xbox achievements, but I don't really care about those. Are there any other features that I will lock myself out of if I don't use xbox account?

My ally did this yesterday and to great effect. It was a black forest game. He infiltrated 1 vil in enemy land, and started spamming palisade everywhere randomly. I know about walling the resources. But this is not what he did. He spammed palisade around, like 1 here and 1 there. Like randomly all over the place. The enemy base was full of palisade. And he didnt have a place to build properly. He started trying to destroy the palisades with vils. But the land was plagued with them. The only thing im not sure is if this is worth it, considering the cost of the wood so early, the work and the vil require to be doing this full time.

Many of the campaigns, from Age of Kings to The Last Chieftans are excellent scenarios reflecting historical battles (sometimes not that accurately) in a range of gameplay. Usually, when I lose to FC + UU, I blame the developers, but today I'm in a good mood, so I'd like to start a small philosophical discussion with all you AoE2 fans here. 11 Okay, so this game is both simple and complex. The simple part is that there is a rock-paper-scissors logic and an economy vs military aspect. There are only 4 resources, so you can easily learn how to play and enjoy the game. The complex part is that there are too many civs, matchups, one-on-one games, team games, play styles, strategies, maps, and a wide variety of things that people enjoy. Some like playing against the AI, some like ranked ladder, some like team games, and so on. There are absolute amateurs who don't even want to learn the basic counters, and who can blame them? Then there are the pros, who want everything to revolve around their near-perfect micro and knowledge, and who have a wide reach in the community. Some want an economic approach; others just want to win. There are some good people and some assholes, and some good people who get angry when they lose. There are also lots of technical limitations, such as server locations and never-ending pathing issues. Most importantly, there are tons of stakeholders and shareholders, all of whom want different things. Some people don't want Microsoft to keep releasing DLC and would prefer them to focus on pathing. Some people get bored playing skirms and would prefer new civs, while others enjoy the new DLC but find it overpowered and unfair. The developers also want new civs to be played or sold more, so they over-tune them or simply don't do a very good job. It's crazy how many different kinds of people there are, all wanting different things, and how complex the whole landscape of this game is. It's amazing how passionate so many people are about this game and how it shapes the lives of everyone involved. I find myself thinking about the game a lot, even when I'm working. I’ve been playing aoe2 on and off for almost 20 years, so every time a new civ got added it felt like a gift to me, I was super excited. But lately I’ve been playing with newer players a lot and I’ve seen the opposite reaction in them: frustration. In an already information dense game they often feel frustrated when a new civ gets added, specially if it has hidden bonuses. For me things like poison damage or bleeding or aura effects are a cool new mechanic, but I don’t see the same reaction in them. Now with the new civs announced I’ve been wondering if infinitely adding more of them is a good thing. Idk maybe I’m worrying about a non issue, I just have paranoia about the game dying, I like new players feeling less overwhelmed.
